The search for a new England manager is well underway following the departure of Gareth Southgate on Tuesday.

Southgate resigned from his role just two days after the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin, and several managers have since been linked with the vacant role.

Following the announcement, the Football Association released a statement explaining that they had a place in place, if required, for someone to take charge in the interim for the start of the Nations League in September, if a permanent successor hasn’t been appointed.

Now, though, it appears that those in charge of the national team are considering a far more radical strategy.

According to The Independent, the FA are considering hiring an interim coach for a year in the hope that they may be able to lure Pep Guardiola to the role next summer.

Guardiola’s contract with Man City expires next summer

The report claims that the FA would be tempted to appoint a temporary successor to Southgate if Guardiola does depart City when his contract expires next summer.

Guardiola has been regarded as arguably the best manager in world football for well over a decade now, and it is claimed that the FA are keen to appoint a manager that understands the culture of the national side, something that Guardiola likely does as he has worked in England for eight years.

Over the course of his illustrious managerial career, Guardiola has lifted now fewer than 38 major trophies, including three Champions League, six Premier League titles and three La Liga titles.

Previously, the 53-year-old has expressed an interest in potentially going into international management one day, but it remains to be seen whether he could be tempted by the prospect of managing the Three Lions.
