The footballing world was shocked earlier this month as a teary-eyed Lionel Messi confirmed that he was to be leaving Barcelona after almost two decades with the Catalan giants.

Just a matter of days after announcing the news, however, the Argentine had agreed a deal to join French side Paris-Saint Germain, on a deal believed to make him the highest paid footballer in history.

While fans are being made to wait to see Messi ply his trade outside of Spain for the first time, it appears that a former teammate could be following Messi in departing the Nou Camp, with the Premier League his most likely destination.

According to The Daily Express, via Goodison News, Everton are interested in the services of Samuel Umtiti, and even claims that the Merseyside club have already made an approach for the player.

Umtiti is believed to be one of several first team players that the club hope will be sold this summer in order to ease the financial difficulties that Barca are currently experiencing.

Samuel Umtiti and Antoine Griezmann are both believed to be on the list of players made available for sale by Barcelona.

Having started just seven league games last term, Umtiti is clearly a fringe player in Ronald Koeman’s squad having fallen behind Clement Lenglet in the pecking order.

Everton, meanwhile, are apparently keen on recruiting a centre-back in order to provide competition for places at the heart of defence.

Michael Keane became the latest Toffees player to fall short of covering himself in glory at the weekend, as his mistake allowed Adam Armstrong to score for Southampton.

Umiti could be offered at a reduced rate due to Barca’s desire to sell, so the French World Cup winner may prove to be a worthwhile purchase if a deal can be agreed.
