Newcastle United will take a slender lead into their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg next week thanks to a 1-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

A second-half goal from Joelinton ensured that The Magpies made the long trip back to Tyneside with an advantage over their opponents, who will travel up to St. James’ park next week.

In the meantime, Newcastle are said to be working on a deal to sign Everton forward Anthony Gordon.

As reported by Sky Sports, Newcastle remain in talks with The Toffees over a proposed move for the 21-year-old, who is said to have missed training in recent days.

With an agreement said to be getting closer, Everton will reportedly look to sign a Chelsea star if Gordon does leave.

Sky also claim that The Toffees hold an interest in Hakim Ziyech and could make a move for the Morocco international if they are forced to replace Gordon.

Ziyech, 29, joined The Blues in 2020 but has never established himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge.

Ziyech is wanted by Everton

The Moroccan has only started four Premier League matches so far this season, and he is yet to score in 15 games across all competitions.

Everton are reportedly willing to pay up to £25 million for the winger, while Chelsea are said to be open to the idea of selling the player.

The Blues have already signed Mykhaylo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke so far this month, making it likely that either Ziyech or Christian Pulisic will leave the club this month or in the summer.

During his two-and-a-half years in west London, Ziyech has only shown glimpses of the superb form that prompted Chelsea to pay £33.3 million to sign him from Ajax.

In total, the winger has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 98 matches across all competitions.

That provides stark contrast to his time in The Netherlands, when the Moroccan scored 49 goals and provided 81 assists in 165 games.

Despite Everton’s interest, it is unclear whether or not the player himself would be open to a move to a side that are currently in the midst of a relegation battle.
