Ex-Manchester United ‘keeper emerges as latest candidate to fill Chelsea’s third-choice void

A whole host of veteran goalkeepers have already been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer, as the Blues look to replace Willy Caballero as the club’s third choice. 

The likes of Wayne Hennessey, Marcus Battinelli and Tom Heaton have all been touted as targets for Chelsea, who are keen to sign a ‘keeper to act as emergency cover for Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Caballero departed the club as a free agent this summer after his deal expired, and it now appears that one of his former international teammates could be about to replace him at Stamford Bridge.
According to The Telegraph, former Manchester United ‘keeper Sergio Romero has emerged as a potential target for Chelsea.

The 34-year-old failed to make a single appearance for Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer’s side last season, but is seen by Chelsea as a suitable replacement for Caballero.

Romero was released by United in June.

Romero spent the vast majority of his six years at Old Trafford as second choice behind David de Gea, however the emergence of Dean Henderson in the top flight saw him pushed down the pecking order.

Romero left United with 39 clean sheets in 69 appearances across all competitions.

The Argentine would find himself behind Kepa and Mendy, and would face the prospect of another season without asenior appearance.

Kepa remains the world’s most expensive goalkeeper despite his lack of game time and poor form, however the Spaniard looked to improve under Tuchel, keeping five clean sheets in eight games under the German.
