Ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand urges club to sign ‘New Michael Carrick’ on Deadline Day, speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube account

Coming off the back of a less than comprehensive 1-0 win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday, United have come under plenty of critcism.

With a superb summer of high-profile signings, the pressure is on the Red Devils to mount a strong title challenge and return to their former glories.

However, yesterday’s game at Molineux was more similar to the frustrating, flat performances the club have produced in recent seasons as they have drifted away from Premier League title contenders.

Striker and club legend Cristiano Ronaldo has rejoined the club, alongside attacking winger Jadon Sancho and world class central defender Rafael Varane.

However, in the midfield area was an area Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side struggled on Sunday, an area where they haven’t strengthened in this summer’s transfer market.

Rio Ferdinand is keen for the club to add to their midfield on Deadline Day. Speaking on his YouTube channel he addressed the type of player they should go for.

He said:  “Fred, his attributes physically to be able to cover the ground and make tackles are really good,”

“In that role, for me, you need someone who can orchestrate. Not only with the ball, I’m talking without the ball. He can position himself to stop trouble before it comes.

Fred has started all three games for Manchester United this campaign.

“A [Michael] Carrick, a [Sergio] Busquets, Fernandinho does it. People that can sit in their position.

“You haven’t got to fly everywhere at 100mph, but they’re in a position to stop the ball getting into these danger areas, they’re an obstacle.

“I think sometimes positionally, that’s where someone like Fred lets himself down. That’s not to discredit him too much because some of the work he does is really really good.

“But I think they need someone in there who can see the game better, who’s more controlled, who’s more calculated in their positioning and decision-making from a defensive perspective.”
