Southampton captain Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request to the club, director of football Les Reed has told BBC Radio Solent.

The Portugal international, who won the European Championship with his national side over the summer, has been linked with a move to join his compatriot, Jose Mourinho, at Manchester United.

The 33-year-old floated the idea of leaving over the summer according to Les Reed, although the Saints chief confirmed that there have been no approaches for the former Crystal Palace defender so far.

Fonte joined Southampton from the south London side in 2010 and has been an integral part in their rise back from the depths of League One to Europa League football.

However, the defender was left out of every European game this season by new manager Claude Puel, which could be attractive to Old Trafford bosses, considering there will be no European cup tie in place.

Fonte has made 286 appearances for the Saints, scoring on 15 occasions, winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy early in his time with the club.
