Former Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage has claimed that a good season for his old side could well be Premier League safety.

The Foxes have put in a poor defence to their title and find themselves 15th in the Premier League, just five points clear of the drop.

With a comprehensive home defeat against league leaders Chelsea at the weekend, Ranieri’s men must look to take advantage of struggling Southampton’s packed schedule when they visit the south coast on Sunday.

Despite their league struggles, the Foxes are flying in the Champions League, with a round of 16 clash against Sevilla to look forward to, and are into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Speaking to Shoot! BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage said:

“Of course it [league finish] matters because I think we’ve seen Leicester on their day, they blew City apart in the opening half hour and that just goes to show what they can achieve.

“They haven’t been consistent, the team’s chopped and changed and they’ve got new players who haven’t hit the ground running.”

The former midfielder, who racked up over 170 appearances for the midlands side, admitted that the performances had been well off what we saw last year, but outlined the factors behind that drop off:

“Players who played well beyond themselves last year, haven’t this season, the ‘keeper has been out and of course they’ve lost Kante.”

“I think if they stay up and they’re in the last 16 of the Champions League, they’ve had a good win the FA Cup, it’s been a fantastic season.”

When pressed on what a respectable Premier League finish would be for Ranieri’s men would be, the former Wales international added:

“Honestly, I think if they stay up.”
