With the January transfer window having slammed shut on Thursday, Premier League clubs were unusually quiet.

The 20 top flight teams spent just £100 million on signings in total, in comparison to more than £800 million during the same period last year.

Several clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea, didn’t sign a single player during the mid-season window.

Now, though, it appears that one of United’s former players rejected a move to another Premier League side.

According to The Athletic, ex-Man United goalkeeper David de Gea rejected the opportunity to join Nottingham Forest last month.

The Spaniard is currently a free agent having departed Old Trafford at the end of last season, but the report claims that he wasn’t interested in a move to the City Ground.

De Gea is currently without a club after leaving Man United last summer

De Gea, 33, made a total of 545 appearances for United during his time with the club, and was United’s first choice ‘keeper for the vast majority of his spell at the club.

The Spain international won no fewer than eight trophies during his spell at Old Trafford, including the Premier League.

It is claimed that De Gea was one of seven players looked at by Forest, with new manager Nuno Esperito Santo – who himself was a goalkeeper during his playing days – unhappy with current first choice Matt Turner.

Ultimately, Forest signed Matz Sels from French side Strasbourg, but they are believed to have also had a £15 million offer rejected for Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab have also been linked with a move for De Gea in recent weeks, while German giants Bayern Munich are also said to have shown an interest in the Spaniard.
