Remi Garde has spoken about his managerial spell at Aston Villa and admits it “looked like a trap” in an interview with TF1.

The 50-year-old, who hasn’t taken up any other job since leaving Villa Park by mutual consent back in March 2016, said, “You know I really like this country, I played there a little bit.

“I had a very short time as a coach over there.

“I would really like to coach in England again in better conditions than at Aston Villa.

“Yes, it looked like a trap that I wasn’t able to figure out before accepting the job.

“I was too enthusiastic, it will serve me well as a lesson learned.”

Garde, a former player for Ligue 1 side Lyon and Premier League outfit Arsenal during his playing career, won just two of his 20 league games in charge of the Villans during his 147-day tenure.

The Frenchman was one of four bosses to manage Villa last term, alongside Tim Sherwood, Kevin MacDonald (interim) and Eric Black (interim), as the club suffered relegation to the Championship.
