It has been three years since Jose Mourinho left Manchester United and, two clubs and three trophyless seasons later, the Portuguese could be about to haunt his former club once more.

The former Chelsea boss was recently appointed as the new manager of Serie A side Roma, just days after being axed from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho will have a difficult job on his hands, with Roma having gone two decades without winning the league title.

The 58-year-old will be reunited with former United defender Chris Smalling, who left the club for the Italian capital while Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford.

Roma have so far been unable to find a club willing to sign Dzeko.

Now, it appears that the manager could be trying to bring another of United’s players to Rome.

According to the Daily Star, Mourinho is chasing veteran striker Edinson Cavani.

The 34-year-old impressed during his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 17 times in 39 appearances, and extended his initial year-long stay by a further 12 months.

According to the report, however, there is ‘an agreement in place’ to take Cavani to Roma if Edin Dzeko departs.

Dzeko has reportedly told the club he wants to leave, and the report states that ‘there is a basic agreement between the club and the player’.

It is not known whether or not United would allow Cavani to leave, or indeed if the player has any desire to depart.

It is also suggested that Roma are currently struggling to find a club willing to sign Dzeko who scored 72 goals in four-and-a-half years with Man City.
