Tottenham were just 15 minutes away from humiliation on Sunday, as they trailed League One strugglers Morecambe in their FA Cup third round tie.

The Shrimps had gone ahead in the 33rd minute courtesy of some questionable Spurs defending, and looked to be closing in on a historic victory until goals from Harry Winks, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane in quick succession saved Antonio Conte’s blushes.

While none of the Lilywhites players covered themselves in glory against a side 59 places below them in the football pyramid, one player in particular came in for particular criticism.

Midfielder Tanguy Ndombele was subject to boos and jeers from the home crowd as he slowly trudged off the pitch when substitutes in the 69th minute on Sunday, and the Frenchman has been linked with a move away from the club in the days since.

The 25-year-old, a club record £53.8 million signing in 2019, has struggled to impress since Conte’s arrival, and has made just nine Premier League appearances this term, completing 90 minutes on only one occasion.

Ndombele was booed by Spurs fans as he exited the pitch on Sunday

Now, the midfielder is being linked with a move to join up with a former manager.

According to Telefoot via The Mail, former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has personally phoned Ndombele in an effort to persuade the player to join him at current club Roma.

The Portuguese managed the Frenchman during his time in North London, and has since identified him as a suitable candidate to bolster his midfield, with his side having had their frailties exposed in a disappointing defeat to Juventus over the weekend.

Roma were 3-1 up but surrendered their lead in just seven minutes to lose 4-3 on Sunday.

The report states that Spurs value the player at £25 million, however the Serie A side are keen on a loan deal with an option-to-buy clause included.

Ndombele was a regular under Mourinho, playing 33 times in the Premier League last term, but has since fallen out of favour under both Conte and Nuno Esperito Santo.

Mourinho has already lured Tammy Abraham and Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, and now looks set to raid another of his former clubs.
