Manchester United’s poor start to the new Premier League campaign continued on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion at old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s side currently sit 13th in the league table having picked up just six points from their opening five matches, and next up they face German champions Bayern Munich in the opening game of their Champions League campaign.

The game will see United face former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, but it appears that it will also give Bayern a chance to assess one of their transfer targets.

According to The Mirror, the Bundesliga champions are considering a potential move for Red Devils midfielder Scott McTominay in January.

The report claims that Bayern could move for the Scot if they fail in their pursuit of Fulham’s Joao Palhinha.

Bayern were close to signing Palhinha during the summer transfer window but ultimately failed to finalise a deal before the deadline, however they could return with a new offer in the new year.

McTominay has emerged as a shock target for Bayern Munich

McTominay, 26, has been involved in the first team at United for several seasons now but has primarily played a bit-part role and the recent arrival of Sofyan Amrabat will only hinder his opportunities.

With that in mind, Bayern could move for the Scotland international if they fail to lure Palhinha to Bavaria, with manager Thomas Tuchel said to be a huge admirer of the player.

In total McTominay has made 212 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, but his only start of the new season so far came during the defeat against the Seagulls on Saturday.

Over the summer the midfielder was heavily linked with a move to fellow Premier League side West Ham United, but the proposed switch never materialised and he instead stayed put at Old Trafford.
