Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of Manchester United when they face Leicester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Dutchman – who scored 150 goals for the Red Devils during his playing days – has been named as interim United boss following the departure of Erik ten Hag on Monday.

Ten Hag was sacked after guiding the Red Devils to just four wins from their opening four matches across all competitions.

Despite Ten Hag only departing on Monday, it appears that United could already be closing in on a permanent successor.

As per Portuguese outlet O Jogo via GiveMeSport, United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Sporting’s Ruben Amorim as the Portuguese club have identified a successor for the 39-year-old.

The report suggests that Amorim’s appointment as United head coach is ‘close to being completed’, with Sporting then set to appoint current ‘B’ team boss Joao Pereira as Amorim’s successor.

Amorim is regarded as one of the best young managers in Europe

Amorim has emerged as the early favourite to succeed Ten Hag, and the report seems to suggest that a deal could be finalised sooner rather than later.

After a relatively disastrous 13-game spell in charge of Braga, Amorim was something of a surprise appointment at Sporting in 2020.

Since then, though, he has enjoyed huge success, guiding his side to five trophies including two Portuguese top flight titles.

Sporting have won all of their opening nine matches of the new Portuguese top flight league season, whilst also winning twice and drawing once in three Champions League games.

Amorim has earned himself a reputation as one of the best young managers in Europe over the past few seasons, and it appears that he will soon be given the opportunity to manage one of the world’s biggest clubs.
