Despite there being no defenders in the final 23-man shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or award, if United were to have a player selected, it would probably be their centre-back, Chris Smalling.

The England international has come on leaps and bounds in 2015, helping his country finish top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group with a 100% record, and starting the new domestic season with a goal in the Champions League and some solid performances – and five clean sheets – in nine matches for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

That carried on from the first half of the year, where he scored three goals, one against arch-rivals Manchester City and two in the 3-1 win against Burnley at Old Trafford in February.
