Whelan is a Republic of Ireland international.

When you think of Ballon d’Or nominees, you wouldn’t usually think of a deep-lying midfield player, but Whelan has probably been Stoke’s most consistent performer in 2015.

The Republic of Ireland international has started the new campaign well, with an 87% passing accuracy for his club so far this term, and helped his country reach the Euro 2016 play-offs as they look to book their place to France next summer.

The 31-year-old has made 21 interceptions and 28 clearances for the Potters this season, and has proved that he is a key player for manager Mark Hughes by playing every minute of their nine Premier League fixtures to date.
