Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy is reportedly ready to ask to leave Everton, according to the Daily Mail.

The Premier League side, who currently sit seventh in the English top-flight standings after their opening 20 league fixtures respectively, are on the lookout for a new central midfielder this January transfer window.

The 26-year-old, who has 41 international caps for his country and starred for Ireland at last summer’s Euro 2016, has provided one assist in just eight appearances in all competitions for The Toffees.

McCarthy, who arrived at Goodison Park back in September 2013 following his reported £13m switch from Wigan Athletic, was brought back into the first-team by manager Ronald Koeman last month, only to pick up a hamstring injury during the Merseyside Derby on December 19.

But with Everton reportedly chasing France and Manchester United star Morgan Schneiderlin, the report suggests McCarthy is ready to quit the club.

They also suggest the likes of Crystal Palace, West Brom, Newcastle United and Aston Villa could be interested in his services.
