Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was finally able to break his semi-final curse with Manchester United, but it was a lot harder than it should have been.

The Red Devils were defeated 3-2 by Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, however, their 6-2 first leg victory at Old Trafford was more than enough to take them into the Europa League final in Gdansk with a 8-5 aggregate score.

While the Norwegian manager would have bit your hand off if he was offered that scoreline and progression before the contest, it was certainly a lot harder than it needed to be.

United goalkeeper David De Gea, who has found himself warming the bench in recent weeks due to the resurgence of Dean Henderson, produced one of his finest performances in his 10 year spell with the club, making 10 saves in a man of the match display against the Italians.

It was a phenomenal performance from the 30-year-old Spanish stopper, earning specific individual praise from Solskjaer in his post match interview.

However, his display may also have been the perfect audition in front of Roma, as their next manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly seeking to bring the Spaniard to Italy, according to Spanish site Todofichajes.

De Gea was remarkable against Roma.

Mourinho was shockingly unveiled as the new manager of Roma just a mere three weeks after being sacked by Spurs and ‘The Special One’ is already looking ahead to next season, when he officially takes the reins of the Giallorossi.

De Gea’s contract expires in 2023 but with the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper earning over £350,000 per week, United will likely be looking to offload him if he is destined to remain on the bench.

The shot stopper worked alongside Mourinho during the Portuguese’s three-year reign as United manager between 2016 and 2018.

Will they be reunited once more? If so, would it be a good move for the Spaniard?
