The Europa League continues on Thursday night with Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both in action.

Spurs defeated Azerbaijani side Aqrabag 3-0 in the opening round of fixtures in the group phase, while the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw bye FC Twente.

Both sides will hope to progress into the latter stages of the competition, which has been revamped this term.

Off the pitch, though, a former manager of both clubs is being linked with a sensational return to the Premier League.

As per Football Insider, Jose Mourinho is a serious contender to replace Sean Dyche once Dan Friedkin completes his takeover of the Merseyside club.

Mourinho enjoyed two hugely successful spells with Chelsea

The Portuguese is currently the manager of Turkish top flight side Fenerbahce, having taken charge over the summer.

Mourinho’s last spell in English football was with Spurs, ending in the summer of 2021 – just days before the Carabao Cup final.

Prior to that, Mourinho had enjoyed two hugely successful spells at Chelsea, as well as a stint with Manchester United.

He was named as Chelsea boss in 2004 after guiding Porto to Champions League glory, and he then led the Blues to two Premier League titles, before returning in 2013 to add a third top flight title.

The 61-year-old has enjoyed huge success at Real Madrid and Inter Milan, as well as Chelsea, while he also won the Europa League and League Cup with Manchester United.

It is claimed that Mourinho is a ‘strong option’ to succeed Dyche, who is expected to be sacked once the takeover is completed.

The Toffees have started the new season in poor form, picking up just four points from their opening six games.
