Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly blocked Lucas Leiva’s move to Galatasaray at the 11th hour because he is worried that he will be left short in midfield, according to the Mirror.

The Turkish giants believed they were on the verge of signing the 29-year-old, who is the Reds’ longest-serving player, but the German boss has pulled the plug on the deal, because of a number of injury concerns in his squad at the current time.

Both James Milner and new boy Marko Grujic are doubtful for the Premier League curtain-raiser against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, leaving just Emre Can and Jordan Henderson who can play in the central midfield positions.

Ironically Lucas, who has made more than 300 appearances for Liverpool, was set to join another Istanbul-based club – Besiktas – on loan last summer, but then Reds boss Brendan Rodgers also called the deal off because of an injury crisis.
