Somehow, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have put themselves in the driving seat to qualify for next season’s Champions League – despite all hope looking lost earlier in the season.

The Reds have leapfrogged Leicester on goal difference going into the final day of the season, and simply have to better former boss Brendan Rogers’ result on Sunday.

Even still, it can’t be pretended that it isn’t a step down from Champions League and then Premier League glory in successive seasons – but the squad has been ravaged with injuries, with key players Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson considerable absentees.

In his press conference ahead of matchday 38, Klopp has identified what he wants from his squad after the transfer window and going into next season.

The German gaffer said: “We are able to be a really uncomfortable opponent – that’s the most important thing. We might
not be the best team in the world at the start of the season but we want to be again the team that nobody wants to play against because we are that good – and I think that’s possible.”

Jurgen Klopp has had considerable success with Liverpool but faces a job if he wants to dethrone Manchester City for a second time

“So, whatever we do or not do in the next transfer window, for sure we will not use it as any kind of excuse. We did what we did in the past with the way we did it, when there was money we spent it, when there was no money we didn’t spend it and here we are.

“That’s how it is. Yes, I’m very happy with my squad, could this squad improve? Yes, like any squad could! Is that affordable? I don’t know. Is it necessary? I don’t know. Whatever happens, we will see. I don’t know in this moment, to be honest.”

Klopp admits that he hasn’t made his mind up on exactly how he sets out to achieve his next aims with this squad, but these challenges are all part of a normal summer window.

He said: “We have to make decisions in and out, all these kind of things, it’s normal in the summer. There’s a
moment in the pre-season when I hold them, the team together, we will go through the season and in that moment we will work on that.”
