Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz Mejia has snubbed a loan move to Liverpool in January in order to stay put in the Spanish capital, according to reports from Spanish outlet EcoDiario.

Last season’s Champions League winners were seemingly happy to let the 23-year-old leave the Santiago Bernabeu on a temporary basis this month, with the striker having very limited chances to play first team football, however, he has opted to snub any deals.

Fellow La Liga side, Alavés, who held Madrid rivals Atletico to a 0-0 draw at the weekend, were also supposedly interested in a deal for the Dominican Republic international.

The news only adds to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s awful month, with just one win from eight games, away to Plymouth in an FA Cup replay, since the turn of the year.

The Reds were dumped out of the EFL Cup in the semi-final, losing to Southampton over two legs without scoring, and the FA Cup in the fourth round against Championship Wolves.
