Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Champions League group phase with an impressive 2-0 victory over holders Real Madrid on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, Alexis Mac Allister put the hosts in front at Anfield but Real were given the chance to level things up from the penalty spot.

Julian Mbappe’s poor form continued, though, as he saw his spot kick saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Mohamed Salah then missed from the penalty spot, before Cody Gakpo wrapped up another three points for Arne Slot’s side, who top both the Champions League and Premier League tables.

Slot has made an excellent start to his tenure on Merseyside, and it now appears that Liverpool have been handed a boost in their search for a new midfielder.

As per Spanish outlet Fichajes via GiveMeSport, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could be on his way to Anfield next summer.

De Jong faces an uncertain future at Barcelona

The report claims that the Dutchman could be ‘living out’ his final months in Catalonia, and a potential move to Liverpool is being mentioned increasingly often.

De Jong, 27, joined the Spanish giants from Ajax in 2019, having helped the Dutch side to the Champions League semi-finals.

Since then he has played more than 220 times for Barcelona, but he has regularly been the subject of speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The Netherlands international’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season, but the report states that the Spanish side’s relatively dire financial situation could ‘facilitate’ De Jong’s potential exit.

The Reds have undergone a complete revamp of their midfield over the past couple of seasons, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho being replaced with Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Mac Allister.

It is claimed that the draw of Premier League football could tempt De Jong to agree a move to Anfield, while Liverpool are expected to make a significant offer to sign the player.
