The Capital One Cup returns this week as the 72 Football League clubs compete in what they hope will be their first match on the road to Wembley.

Last season’s semi-finalists Sheffield United, managed by Nigel Adkins, will be hoping to put Saturday’s opening 4-0 defeat at Gillingham behind them when they make the trip to League Two Morecambe.

Fellow third-tier side Bradford, who shocked everyone to reach the 2013 final, start with an away trip to fellow Yorkshire side York City.

QPR, Hull City and Burnley start with away ties at Yeovil, Accrington and Port Vale respectively, just a few months after getting relegated from the Premier League.

The pick of Wednesday’s ties sees League Two favourites Portsmouth host Championship favourites Derby County, who will be without midfield star Will Hughes for six months after he picked up a knee injury at Bolton, while Thursday’s only match pits Leeds United away to Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Elsewhere, Millwall welcome Barnet and Charlton play host to Dagenham in London derbies, while Brighton, fresh from an opening day win, face a tricky trip to League One new boys Southend.

Bury make the short trip to 2006 finalists Wigan, 207 semi-finalists Wycombe welcome Fulham and Neil Lennon’s Bolton entertain Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton at the Macron Stadium.
