Player of the Month: Sulley Kaikai (Shrewsbury Town)

The Crystal Palace loanee joined the Shrews for a second spell this season in early March, and helped inspire Micky Mellon’s side to some crucial results as they aim for League One survival.

Having come on for a short spell against Doncaster, Kaikai started and scored within nine minutes in the victory over Coventry at the New Meadow. He followed this with another strike in the 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe.

He netted two superb goals at Bury in the Shrews’ next game as his brace ensured another 2-2 draw. And the Eagles star then scored another beauty to rescue a draw and Shrewsbury’s unbeaten run in a 1-1 stalemate with Port Vale.

The Shrews went unbeaten through March to extend their run of avoiding defeat to nine league games. Former Fleetwood boss Mellon has overseen a turnaround in form that has now dragged Shrewsbury five points clear of the League One relegation zone.

They began the month fourth from bottom but responded by winning three consecutive games against Rochdale, relegation rivals Doncaster and Coventry. Though this has been followed by three draws in a row, all of those stalemates were against teams placed higher in the table and still represents an excellent spell of form.

March’s great form could prove to be pivotal to the Shrews’ survival hopes, with tricky games against promotion chasing Wigan, Millwall and Bradford next up, along with trips to Gillingham and Walsall later in the month.
