Sam Winnall was the hero as Barnsley planted one foot in the League One play-off final after roaring to a 3-0 win over Walsall.

The Tykes took the lead on the stroke of half-time, when Jason Demetriou converted the ball into his own net. Winnall then doubled the hosts’ lead with a wonderful finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Striker Winnall has now scored 24 goals in all competitions this season for Barnsley.

The 25-year-old then grabbed his second of the afternoon after a spectacular 50-yard run, in which he calmly placed the ball over the goal-line. The Tykes will be hoping to ensure their trip to England’s national stadium in the second leg with the knowledge that no side has ever overturned a three-goal deficit to reach the play-off final.

Meanwhile Millwall came from a goal down to beat Bradford 3-1 away from home as the Lions controlled their own first-leg clash.

Tony McMahon had put the Bantams in front after coolly slotting home a penalty just after ten minutes played, but it took the visitors just 96 seconds to equalise as Lee Gregory’s great turn and even better finish made it 1-1, quarter-of-an-hour into the contest.

Steve Morison then put Neil Harris’ side ahead before half-time with a powerful header and Joe Martin, who gave the penalty away earlier, doubled the visitors’ lead before the break with a superb free-kick.
