Bury dismantled Port Vale at home as they romped to a 4-1 victory in League One, with James Vaughan the star of the show, on his home debut.

The former Everton striker scored twice inside the first 30 minutes, either side of a wonder strike from Jacob Mellis, who found the back of the net for the first time in over two years with a curling right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The Valiants pulled one back through Nathan Smith early in the second-half, but another former Everton youth player made it four for the Shakers, as Hallam Hope’s deflected strike looped over Jak Alnwick in the Vale goal.

Shrewsbury Town claimed only their second win in League One this campaign, after coming from a goal down to win 3-2 at Oldham Athletic. Josh Law’s low free-kick put the hosts in front, before Junior Brown headed the equaliser from Joe Riley’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

On-loan Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney then put the Shrews 2-1 up when he converted a penalty shortly after the restart and Riley gave the visitors a two-goal cushion when he drilled in from 12-yards. The Latics did manage to pull one back when Lee Erwin tapped in the rebound from Freddie Ladapo’s initial strike.

Northampton Town survived a Milton Keynes Dons comeback to claim their first win since last season and the Cobblers have now gone 30 league matches unbeaten, as they won 3-2. Harry Beautyman, Alex Revell and Matt Taylor’s free-kick put the hosts 3-0 up with less than 30 minutes played. Dean Bowditch dented their lead just before half-time, but the visitors had to wait until second-half stoppage-time before they netted again, with Samir Carruthers the scorer.

Sheffield United needed a stoppage-time penalty to claim victory at Gillingham as they won 2-1. Bradley Dack put the Gills in front with a superb free-kick, but the Blades fought back to claim all three points. Kieron Freeman equalised soon after the break and Billy Sharp’s coolly taken penalty in the 91st minute gave the visitors their first away win of the season.

Bolton Wanderers remain top of League One despite drawing 1-1 at home to Southend United. Harry Kyprianou put Phil Brown’s side ahead with less than quarter-of-an-hour gone when he met John White’s cross. Only for Trotters debutant Keshi Anderson, on-loan from Crystal Palace, to tap-in an equaliser.

AFC Wimbledon clinched their first-ever victory in the third-tier of English football as they beat Chesterfield 2-1 at home. The Dons initially went behind when Darius Charles put the ball into his own net, when trying to defend a corner, but the hosts hit back through Paul Robinson and Dominic Poleon’s right-footed drive in second-half stoppage-time.

Swindon Town came from a goal down twice, to earn a 2-2 draw at Peterborough United, with both sides only managing a point apiece. Gwion Edwards bundled the ball over the line for Posh from Michael Maddison’s free-kick, as he scored his fourth goal of the season since his summer transfer from Crawley Town.

But the Robins responded as Michael Doughty, who was instrumental for the visitors, converted a penalty shortly after half-time. The hosts re-took the lead as they netted a spot kick of their own through Maddison, but with less than 15 minutes to go, Doughty’s cross was turned in by the hosts’ defender Jack Baldwin.

Fleetwood Town continued their good start to the season under Uwe Rosler by beating injury-stricken Coventry City 2-0 at home. The Sky Blues had over a third of their squad unavailable for the match and the hosts took advantage with goals from Chris Long and Martyn Woolford sealing all three points.

Oxford United ensured their second league victory of the new campaign as they won 1-0 at home to Rochdale. Liam Sercombe was the game’s only scorer, as he met Marvin Johnson’s cross in the 88th minute to clinch a much needed three points for the U’s.

Bradford City were the denied the opportunity to go top of League One, as they drew 1-1 away at Millwall in an early clash between two of the division’s promotion favourites.

Byron Webster was the unfortunate Lions defender, who put the ball into his own net as the Bantoms took a half-time lead. But, a terrific effort by Joe Martin from 20-yards out, with his right-foot meant it was a point apiece.
