Walsall moved up into second place in League One after defeating Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Two quick-fire second-half goals set the Saddlers on their way. Sam Mantom and Andy Taylor scored within four minutes of each other to give the visitors all three points to move them just a point behind league leaders Burton. Liam Mandeville netted Donny’s consolation as the hosts stay 16th.

Winger Will Atkinson opened the scoring for Southend against Shrewsbury to help Phil Brown’s outfit record back-to-back league wins.

Southend leapt up to seventh spot with a 2-1 away win over Shrewsbury, despite playing 25 minutes with just ten men. Will Atkinson had given the Shrimpers a first-half lead, before Andy Mangan pulled the home side level early in the second period.

Michael Timlin’s dismissal after 65 minutes gave the visitors a numerical disadvantage, but a Stephen Hendrie strike was enough for victory. Phil Brown’s men are now only outside the top six on goal difference having pulled themselves level on points with sixth placed Millwall. A tenth home league defeat for the Shrews keeps them in 20th, just a point above the relegation places.

And finally Port Vale moved themselves to within a point of the play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Swindon. Carl Dickinson’s goal after just six minutes settled this tie for Vale as they move up to eighth. The Robins remain 17th.
