Gillingham went top of League One after beating promotion favourites Sheffield United 4-0, with the goals coming from four different scorers, to seal a superb start to the season.

Newly-promoted Burton Albion started off where they ended last season with a 2-1 opening day win over Scunthorpe at the Pirelli Stadium.

There was a dispute in the clash between Doncaster and Bury, after Harry Forrester scored for Donny, whilst kicking the ball back to the keeper after it had been kicked out for an injury, meaning they allowed Leon Clarke to score straight from kick-off to level the scores at 1-1.

Wigan got off to a terrible start losing 2-0 to Coventry at the Ricoh Arena through two goals from on-loan Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong, while Nathan Byrne scored a hat-trick for Swindon as they came from 1-0 down to beat Bradford 4-1 at the County Ground.

Chesterfield also got off to a flyer with a 3-1 home win over Barnsley, after initially going a goal down, while Millwall won their first away game since February after beating Shrewsbury 1-2.

Elsewhere, Fleetwood and Southend drew 1-1 and Walsall shared the same scoreline with Oldham.

Neither Crewe or Port Vale could break the deadlock as their fixture finished 0-0, Rochdale defeated Peterborough 2-0 and, finally, Colchester and Blackpool played out a 2-2 draw.
