Teddy Sheringham’s managerial career got off to a bad start after Stevenage lost at home 2-0 to Notts County.

The striker’s former club, Portsmouth, showed why they are considered promotion favourites with a 3-0 victory over Dagenham at Fratton Park – a brace from Kyle Bennett and another from Gareth Evans sealed the win.

Barry Corr scored a brace as Cambridge easily dispatched Terry Butcher’s Newport 3-0 at home, while Leyton Orient started their campaign with a 2-0 victory over promoted Barnet.

Bristol Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Northampton and Mansfield could only draw 1-1 with Carlisle after taking the lead thanks to a great free-kick by Malvind Benning.

Elsewhere, Accrington drew 1-1 with Luton after letting in a stoppage-time goal by Craig Mackail-Smith on his debut.

Recently relegated Crawley, who are one of the favourites to go down again this campaign, drew 1-1 away at Oxford, meanwhile Exeter beat Yeovil 3-2 and Wimbledon went down to 2-0 at home to Plymouth.

Debutants Billy Paynter and Rakish Bingham sealed three points as Hartlepool easily dispatched Morecambe 2-0 and, finally, last season’s play-off final losers Wycombe kicked-off their season with a 3-0 win at home over York.
