The first transfer window of the summer slammed shut on Tuesday night, ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup which starts on Sunday.

This summer’s window is split into two, allowing teams competing in the competition to register players prior to it beginning.

Clubs will once again be allowed to sign players from Monday 16 June until the window once again closes on September 1.

Premier League champions Liverpool have already added full-back Jeremie Frimpong to Arne Slot’s squad, following the departure of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Now, it appears that the Reds are set to complete a record-breaking deal to sign one of Frimpong’s former teammates.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz for a fee of around £127 million including add-ons.

The deal will see Wirtz, 22, become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, putting him ahead of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Romano claims that the Premier League champions have verbally agreed a deal with Leverkusen to sign the attacking midfielder, with personal terms having already been tied up with the player himself.

Wirtz is now set to undergo a medical with the Merseyside club before signing a long-term deal with the Premier League champions.

Having joined Leverkusen as a teenager, the German has now made more than 190 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions, scoring 57 goals and registering 65 assists.

The Germany international’s current contract with Leverkusen is set to run until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, but Romano suggests that he will in fact be joining Liverpool this summer.

Wirtz primarily operates as an attacking midfielder but can also be deployed as a striker.
