Carabao Cup holders Liverpool begin their defence of the trophy by welcoming West Ham United to Anfield on Wednesday.

The Reds beat Chelsea in last season’s final at Wembley and new head coach Arne Slot will be hoping to see his side go far in the competition once again this time around.

The Hammers have endured a tough start to the season under new boss Julen Lopetegui, and he will be wishing for an unlikely victory at Anfield to kickstart his side’s season.

In the build up to the match, it appears that Liverpool are set to offer one of their attackers a new contract.

According to Football Insider, winger Luis Diaz is set to be offered a new deal as a reward for his fine start to the new campaign.

It is claimed that the Merseyside outfit were open to the idea of selling Diaz during the recent summer window, but his impressive performaces in the early weeks of the season have won over Slot.

Diaz has started the new season in fine form

Diaz, 27, scored against Brentford in August before netting twice in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over rivals Manchester United prior to the international break.

He also netted a brace during the Reds’ 3-0 victory against Bournemouth on Saturday, and only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has scored more goals than the Colombian in the Premier League so far this term.

Diaz is currently contracted to Liverpool until the summer of 2027 but the report suggests that he will be offered an extension to his deal that will also earn him a pay rise.

The Colombia international joined Liverpool from Portuguese side Porto in 2022 and has since played over 100 times for the Merseyside giants, scoring 29 times and registering 14 assists.

He has started all five of the Reds’ league games so far this season, and also made a substitute appearance during their win over AC Milan in the Champions League.
