Liverpool have completed the signing of forward Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, bringing an end to one of this summer’s biggest transfer sagas.

While the transfer window slammed shut at 7pm on Monday for Premier League clubs, the Reds announced the deal later in the evening.

The reigning Premier League champions did not disclose the transfer fee involved in the deal, but BBC Sport claims that the Merseyside outfit have paid a fee of £125 million for the Sweden international, making him the most expensive signing in British transfer history.

Isak, 25, joined the Magpies from Spanish side Real Sociedad back in 2022 and has since scored 62 goals in 109 games for the club across all competitions.

He netted in last season’s Carabao Cup final as Newcastle defeated Liverpool to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, but the forward has not featured for Eddie Howe’s side so far this season amid uncertainty surrounding his future.

Liverpool have confirmed that the Sweden international completed a medical on Monday and has now signed a long-term contract with the club.

Isak becomes Liverpool’s sixth major signing of the summer, with Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz among those to have also arrived at Anfield.

The Swede boasts an impressive record in the Premier League, having scored 54 goals in 86 games in the competition during his spell on Tyneside.

Last term, he finished as runner-up in the Premier League scoring charts, behind Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah.
