Liverpool will hope to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday.

The Reds suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat against Spurs in the first leg in North London, but Arne Slot’s side go into Thursday’s second-leg at Anfield as favourites to reach the final despite their disadvantage.

The Merseyside outfit currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table and also topped the Champions League standings, so it is perhaps unsurprising that the reds didn’t sign any new players during the recent January transfer window.

It has emerged since, though, that the club may be eyeing new signings this summer.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are set to target a new midfielder when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The Reds underwent a complete midfield overhaul a couple of years ago, but the report claims that the Merseyside outfit are having internal conversations about bolstering Slot’s midfield options this summer.

De Jong could be available this summer but his wages could prove too costly for Liverpool

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is touted as one possible target for the club – with the Dutchman set to be available for less than £30 million – but the report claims that the player’s wages could deter the Reds.

The Netherlands international has played more than 230 times for Barcelona since joining the club in 2019, but he has been regularly linked with a move away from Catalonia.

It is claimed that the player’s significant wages have put clubs including Liverpool off the idea of signing De Jong previously.

Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, 23, is also saus to be a potential target for Liverpool who could take advantage of the player’s £33 million release clause.

The Germany international – who is primarily a defensive midfielder – has played 67 times for Stuttgart across all competitions.
