Liverpool produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

The Magpies went ahead through former Everton man Anthony Gordon and were handed a further boost moments later when Virgil van Dijk was sent off for a last ditch foul.

Eddie Howe’s side looked set to take all three points from the game, until substitute Darwin Nunez turned the match on its head with two late goals to give the visitors victory.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now picked up seven points from their opening three Premier League games so far this season, but it appears that the German is still keen to bolster his squad in the final days of the transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are pushing to complete a deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko.

It is claimed that Liverpool face stiff competition from some of their Premier League rivals in the race to sign the player, though, with Everton, Crystal Palace and Burnley also interested in his services.

Bakayoko remains of interest to a number of Premier League clubs

The report claims that the Clarets have already had two offers rejected for the player so far this summer, while the Eagles have entered into the race to sign Bakayoko following Wilfried Zaha’s departure to Turkish side Galatasaray.

Bakayoko, 20, is a product of PSV’s youth academy and has impressed since making his senior debut for the club during the 2021/22 campaign.

In total the Belgian has made 43 appearances across all competitions for PSV, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists.

The youngster has already made six appearances so far this term and has been particularly impressive in Europe, registering four assists in three Champions League qualifying games.

The winger was handed his senior international debut back in March and has now been capped four times by Belgium.

It is claimed that Bakayoko’s future could depend on whether or not PSV qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, with the Dutch side facing Rangers in the second leg of their qualifying tie on Tuesday.
