Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League were dealt a huge blow as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Reds now trail fourth-placed Manchester United by three points, and the Red Devils now need just a single point to secure their place in next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle United, who sit third in the table, ensured they will be in Europe’s top club competition next term after a goalless draw against Leicester City on Monday.

Liverpool are therefore relying on United losing their two remaining matches if they are to have any chance of finishing in the top four.

It appears, though, that Jurgen Klopp will be looking to bolster his squad this summer regardless of where they finish in the table.

As per Football Insider, the Reds are hoping to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves during the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims that Neves made clear his intentions of leaving Molineux with a lap of honour following Wolves’ draw against Everton on Saturday.

Neves is expected to leave Wolves this summer

Neves, 26, has been a key player for Wolves since joining the club from Porto back in 2017.

The midfielder initially joined the club when they were in the Championship but played a crucial role in helping Wolves to the second tier title during his first season in English football.

Since then, he has established himself as one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League, although it appears increasingly likely that he will depart Molineux this summer.

In total, Neves has scored 30 goals and provided 13 assists in 252 matches across all competitions.

Liverpool reportedly have a firm interest in the Portugal international, and the report claims that Wolves are demanding a cash-only deal for the player which could rule Spanish giants Barcelona out of the running to sign him.

The Reds will be in the market for a new central midfielder following the news that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita will all depart the club when their contracts expire at the end of the current season.
