Liverpool will face a potentially tough test against Chelsea when the Premier League returns after the international break.

Arne Slot’s side currently sit top of the pile after picking up six wins from seven games at the start of the Dutchman’s reign.

Liverpool haven’t won the top flight title since the 2019/20 campaign, but former Feyenoord boss Slot will be optimistic about his chances of doing so this time around.

Off the pitch, though, the Reds appear to be fighting off interest in one of their key players from one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

According to Football Insider, Spanish giants Real Madrid are stepping up their interest in Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The European champions have been linked with the Englishman for some time now, but the report claims that they are now increasing their efforts to sign the player following a long-term injury to first choice right-back Dani Carvajal.

Alexander-Arnold remains of interest to Spanish champions Real Madrid

Alexander-Arnold, 26, is currently in the final year of his contract with Liverpool, although the report claims that the Premier League outfit are optimistic about their chances of persuading the player to stay put.

The defender, who has transitioned into a midfield role of late, is a product of the Reds’ youth system and has now made a total of 219 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

It is claimed that Liverpool have ruled out the possibility of selling Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window, despite his contract expiring next summer.

At present, the England international would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club – including Real – in January.

The report suggests that the player himself has ‘put the ball in Liverpool’s court’ in regard to his future, although Liverpool are also having to work on the futures of both Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk – both of whom are also in the final year of their respective deals.
