Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign Switzerland international defender Silvan Widmer this summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Insider).

The Premier League side; who finished eighth in the English top-flight standings last term, although they did reach the final in both the League Cup and Europa League too, are understood to have joined Napoli in the hunt to recruit the Udinese right-back ahead of the upcoming 2016/17 campaign.

The 23-year-old, who has seven international caps for his country but was not included in Switzerland’s 23-man squad for the 2016 European Championships in France this summer, provided three assists in 28 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit last season.

Widmer, who has four years remaining on his current deal with Udinese, is wanted by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to reinforce his defence at Anfield next term.

The reports suggests that Liverpool are ready to fight Napoli for the Swiss star’s services, with the Premier League club willing to meet the £6.6m asking price.
