Liverpool started their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 win over Real Betis in their first friendly of the summer on Saturday.

Dominik Szobozslai’s first-half goal earned Arne Slot’s side victory over their Spanish opponents, and the Reds face Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United in their next two friendlies.

The Merseyside outfit are one of the only English top flight clubs that are yet to make a signing during the current transfer window, but that could be about to change.

As per Tutto Mercato Web via The Mirror, Liverpool are leading the race to sign Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup.

Fellow Premier League side Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the 23-year-old, who impressed for Genoa last term.

The Dane joined his current side from Brondby in January 2022, and he has since played 89 times for the Italian side across all competitions.

Frendrup has emerged as a target for Liverpool this summer

Last term, the central midfielder missed just one of Genoa’s 38 Serie A matches, and his impressive performances have alerted those in charge of Liverpool’s recruitment.

It is claimed that the Reds showed interest in Frendrup during the recent January window, but decided ultimately to continue monitoring the player.

Current Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo has been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks, and if the Japan international does depart Merseyside it could open the door for Frendrup to be signed.

Frendrup’s current contract with Genoa isn’t set to expire until the end of the 2027/28 season, but Liverpool could move for him before the current transfer window slams shut at the end of August.
