Premier League champions Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead as they drew 2-2 against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Reds started strongly at Anfield and soon found themselves 2-0 up courtesy of quick fire goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.

Mikel Arteta’s side drew one back shortly after the restart through Gabriel Martinelli, and Mikel Merino then drew the visitors level before being shown a second yellow and being sent off.

The result leaves Arsenal second in the Premier League table, but they are not yet guaranteed a place in the top five and automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could still reach 89 points this term if they win their remaining two matches.

In the meantime, it has emerged that a Liverpool star could depart the club sooner than expected.

As reported by Football Insider, Liverpool are likely to reach an agreement to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to depart the club prior to the end of his current contract.

The right-back’s deal is set to expire at the end of June and he announced last week that he would depart Anfield at the end of the season.

He has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, and the report claims that Liverpool are likely to agree a deal with their La Liga counterparts that would see the defender leave early.

The defender is a product of Liverpool’s youth system and has now played more than 350 times for the Merseyside club across all competitions, providing 92 assists and scoring 23 times in that time.

Having announced his decision to depart the club at the end of the current campaign, the England international was booed by sections of the Anfield crowd during the 202 draw against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The report claims that Real Madrid – who have yet to announce his impending arrival in the Spanish capital – are keen to sign the player prior to the FIFA Club World Cup in the US which starts on June 14.
