Liverpool are reportedly considering making a surprise swoop for former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi.

The Premier League outfit; who suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at struggling Newcastle United on Sunday, are thought to be keen on bolstering their attacking options during the forthcoming January transfer window, with the Italy international understood to be ranked highly on their transfer wish list.

The 28-year-old, who has 29 international caps for his country, has scored two goals in 11 appearances in all competitions for Serie A side Fiorentina so far this season.

It is understood that new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp; who succeeded former manager Brendan Rodgers at Anfield back in October, is willing to splash out up to £18m to tempt the United hitman back to the English top-flight next month.

Rossi, who is struggling to get back into the Italian side’s first-team after missing the entirety of the 2014-15 campaign with a cruciate ligament injury, netted four goals in just 12 appearances at Old Trafford during his three-year spell with the Red Devils.
