The World Cup started in spectacular fashion on Sunday as hosts Qatar were beaten 2-0 by a dominant Ecuador side.

Two first-half goals from ex-West Ham man Enner Valencia were enough to give Ecuador victory and put them top of Group A, with Qatar becoming the first hosts in history to lose their opening game of a World Cup.

The showpiece event will give players from across the world a chance to impress, and several Premier League clubs are likely to be watching to monitor any standout performers.

One of those clubs is Liverpool, who are believed to be interested in adding different options in a couple of positions.

Despite this, it is being reported that one of their current stars could be on his way out of the club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to leave Liverpool as a free agent next summer.

The 29-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, and Romano claims that there have so far been no talks to extend the player’s deal.

The Englishman joined The Reds from rivals Arsenal back in the summer of 2017, but he has since struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move to Liverpool hasn’t gone to plan

Oxlade-Chamberlain, a 35-time England international, has struggled with injuries throughout his time in England.

He has made just 137 appearances for his current side, although he has won the Premier League, Champions League and both domestic cups.

Romano also suggests that Liverpool will prioritise adding new midfielders to their squad next summer, with Oxlade-Chamberlain not part of their plans.

This term, the former Gunner has played just 29 minutes of Premier League football and hasn’t started a single game in the competition.

During the recent summer transfer window, The Reds were linked with a number of targets as they looked to add to their midfield ranks, but they ultimately failed in most of their pursuits, with a loan deal for Arthur Melo their only acquisition.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was previously linked with a move to Aston Villa during Steven Gerrard’s time in charge of the club, with the 29-year-old having admitted his admiration for the ex-England captain.
