Over the last two decades, Real Madrid have established themselves as arguably the most powerful club in the football world.

It was only 11 years ago when they broke the transfer record, not once, but twice, in the same window to sign Kaka from AC Milan and Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for a combined £136 million.

Several big money signings have gone through the revolving door at the Bernabeu with the likes of James Rodriguez, Eden Hazard and Luka Modric just to name a few.

However, their status as one of the financial powerhouses in world football is under threat, and the days of the 13-time European champions splashing the cash and breaking spending records are under serious threat.

The coronavirus pandemic has threatened nearly all clubs and reports by SPORT believe Real Madrid are in serious debt to the tune of 900 million euros.

This could also see the club let go some of their high earners to ease the burden.

One particular star man who could be sacrificed is defender and World Cup winner Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman has been one of the pillars of Real Madrid’s success, forming an impenetrable partnership with captain Sergio Ramos on their way to winning four Champions Leagues in five seasons between 2014 and 2019.

However, the World Cup winner’s contract is set to expire in 2022 and, according to the Sunday Mirror, Liverpool are monitoring the situation very closely.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been crippled by injuries in the defensive department this term, losing Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

A move for the defender, who would reportedly be available for around £61 million, could solve those problems in the summer.
