Liverpool have made a decent crack at defending the league title they won for the first time in 30 years last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds sit top of the Premier League, two points ahead of second-placed Manchester United with 15 games played.

One of their key players once again has been midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who has been excellent since his move from Newcastle United in 2016.

The Netherlands international has played in all 15 Premier League games so far this term, taking his appearance tally in a red shirt to 208.

However, the Premier League, Champions League and World Club Cup winner’s future is in doubt with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, via The Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in prizing the 30-year-old away from Anfield.

Wijnaldum has again been a key player for Liverpool this season.

It’s claimed that the Molineux side are ready to rival Barcelona in the race for the Dutchman’s signature, if he chooses not to extend his stay on Merseyside.

Leaving the Reds would seem a strange decision for a player who is still a very key member of the side.

However, at 30 years of age, he may not get another chance to seal a big move to a club such as Barcelona.

Wolves’ reported interest is a real twist in the story as it seems unlikely he’d leave the champions for a fellow Premier League side.

And with with foreign clubs able to speak to Wijnaldum from next week, if he decides not to pen a new Liverpool deal, Barcelona and Inter Milan, who are also thought to be interested, would get a head start.
