Liverpool will return to action when they face Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently sit second in the Premier League table, but are level on points with leaders Arsenal, who face third-placed Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds have already lifted the Carabao Cup this season and were hoping to complete an unprecedented quadruple, but their FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Manchester United ended their chances of doing so.

Klopp will be desperate to lift a second Premier League title in his final season in charge of Liverpool, but both City and the Gunners will also be keen to deny him another honour.

In the meantime, it appears that those in charge of the Merseyside club are still working to find Klopp’s successor.

As per Football Insider, Liverpool remain hopeful of persuading Xabi Alonso to succeed Klopp this summer, despite rumours suggesting the Spaniard is set to join Bayern Munich.

Alonso is a target for several clubs this summer

Alonso is currently manager of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and is enjoying a remarkable season, with his side top of the German top flight table and unbeaten across all competitions so far this term.

As Leverkusen close in on a first ever Bundesliga title, Alonso has been heavily linked with soon-to-be vacant managerial positions at Liverpool, Bayern and Spanish side Barcelona.

It had been reported recently that the ex-Spain midfielder was likely to choose a move to Bayern, but the report claims that Liverpool are still optimistic about their chances of luring him to Merseyside.

It is also claimed that the Premier League side are ready to ‘break the bank’ to land their former midfielder, who could win an impressive treble of trophies this season.

The report also claims that Liverpool are exploring other options and do have fall-backs if they fail to land Alonso.
