Premier League giants Liverpool are seeking to give left-back Gael Clichy a top-flight lifeline following his release from Manchester City, according to The Sun.

The 31-year-old saw his six-year stay at the Etihad Stadium come to an end this summer after his contract was not renewed, bringing the curtain down on a Citizens career which saw the former France international win two Premier League titles, and two League Cup crowns.

The former Arsenal defender, part of their Invincibles squad of 2004, has seen his gametime reduce at the club in recent seasons, and with just 16 Premier League appearances this time round, the writing was on the wall for Clichy as manager Pep Guardiola looks to transform his City squad ahead of next season.

However, the defender’s Premier League career may not be over just yet, as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have reportedly offered him a two-year deal to move to Anfield this summer.

The Reds secured fourth place in the top-flight this term and thus a return to the Champions League next time round, although the left-back area has been an issue this season, with midfielder James Milner filling in such was the woeful start to the campaign from Alberto Moreno.

Thus, signing a natural full-back and one vastly experienced at both domestic and European level would seriously benefit the Merseyside outfit in their quest to be competitive on both stages next season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Clichy accepts the deal and thus moves to Anfield this summer, as there is also reported interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
