Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum faces a race to be fit in time for Liverpool’s Monday Night Football clash against Manchester United in the Premier League after picking up an injury whilst on international duty.

The Netherlands star, who won his 34th international cap during his side’s 1-0 2018 World Cup qualifying defeat to France, was replaced by substitute Bas Dost after the hour-mark with what looked to be a hamstring problem.

The 25-year-old, who arrived at Anfield from Championship outfit Newcastle United earlier this summer for a reported £25m, has provided two assists in eight appearances in all competitions for the Reds so far this season.

However, his setback on Monday night will concern Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the club’s showdown with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United on October 17 at Anfield, with the hosts seeking their fifth successive league victory.

Wijnaldum and his team-mates currently sit two places and three points ahead of the Red Devils after brushing aside Leicester City, Chelsea, Hull City and Swansea City in their last four Premier League outings.

However it was fellow midfielder, Paul Pogba, of Manchester United, who stole the headlines for France last night, netting a stunning long-range winner to seal all three points in Group A.
