The Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with a 3-0 win over Romania on Tuesday night.

Ronald Koeman’s side had only managed to finish third in Group D but made light work of Romania, with Cody Gakpo opening the scoring in the first half before Donyell Malen added a brace after the break.

The win ensures the Dutch progress into the competition’s last eight, where they will face either Austria or Turkey.

In the meantime, though, it has emerged that one of the stars of the Dutch team could have a very different role to play at club level next season.

As per Football Insider, new Liverpool boss Arne Slot is set to use Gakpo exclusively as a centre-forward next term.

The Netherlands international will work under his fellow countryman from the start of next term, and the report claims that Slot intends to use him as a striker.

Gakpo scored against Romania on Tuesday

Since joining the Reds from PSV Eindhoven in 2023, Gakpo has been used in a number of different positions including on both flanks and as a centre forward.

The latter is set to become his full-time role, though, according to the report.

Since his move to Anfield, the Dutchman has scored 23 goals and provided nine assists in 79 matches across all competitions under former boss Jurgen Klopp.

The report also claims that Liverpool are currently targeting a left winger during the transfer window, having already failed to lure Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United to Anfield.
