Liverpool are trying to sign Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio despite having a £160million offer for the player turned down last summer, according to Spanish outlet OK Diario.

The 22-year-old is considered to be one of the most exciting young players in Europe and has already played 109 times for La Liga giants since his switch from Mallorca in 2014.

However, the playmaker hasn’t quite hit the heights expected of him this term with just two goals and some lacklustre performances in the Bernabeu side’s disappointing season to date.

But this hasn’t reportedly put of Reds chief Jurgen Klopp who, as Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda explains, is continuing to pursue the Spain star after launching a huge bid for him in the last transfer window.

Asensio has represented Spain 20 times.

This year, an offer of 180m euros [£160m] came to Liverpool’s Real Madrid for Asensio,” said Inda.

The club said no because Cristiano left, but Klopp is in love with the player and will go for the player next summer.

Asensio has scored in Champions League, European Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup victories for Real Madrid.
