Liverpool welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds sit second in the Premier League table at present, but are level on points with leaders Arsenal and remain firmly in the hunt for the title.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to lift the Premier League trophy for a second time, in his final season in charge before he departs Anfield this summer.

Those in charge of the club have been working to find a suitable successor to Klopp, but it appears that the club will miss out on their top target.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is set to stay put at the German club for one more season.

The former Spain midfielder is enjoying a remarkable season so far, with his side sitting ten points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table and also unbeaten across all competitions so far this term.

Alonso is set to remain in charge of Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season

As Leverkusen close in on a first ever Bundesliga title, Alonso has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be vacant managerial roles at Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Despite this, Romano claims that the Spaniard will stay put for one more year, before a release clause in his contract becomes active next summer.

Leverkusen have won 22 of their 26 German top flight games this season under the stewardship of Alonso, who played a total of 210 games for the Reds across all competitions during his playing career.

The German side remain on course to complete a treble this season, with the league title, DFB Pokal and Europa League all still winnable.

Romano claims that both Liverpool and Bayern have been informed of Alonso’s decision.
