Jurgen Klopp welcomes his former club to Anfield on Thursday on what will be a special night for both teams, with his current employers confident of progressing to the Europa League semi-finals.
Divock Origi, who was a surprise inclusion ahead of England international Daniel Sturridge in the first leg in Germany last week, fired Liverpool into the lead at Signal Iduna Park.
However, Germany international Mats Hummels equalised for Borussia Dortmund just after half-time, but Liverpool will be confident of advancing to the last four after grabbing that all-important away goal.
However, this is not a forgone conclusion. Dortmund have been dangerous all season and are riding high in the Bundesliga. A 2-2 draw at Schalke last time out may have hindered their title ambitions, but Thomas Tuchel’s side are still second going into the closing stages of the season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, go into the second leg following a convincing 4-1 win over Stoke City on Sunday – Origi was again impressive as he netted a brace for the Reds.
The eventual Europa League winners, who will be crowned in Basel in May, will qualify for the Champions League next season. Due to their league position, Dortmund have already qualified for European football’s leading competition.
But Liverpool, who are eighth in the Premier League, are set to miss out on the top four and so their only chance of making the Champions League next term is by lifting the trophy in Switzerland.
Origi is likely to retain his starting place ahead of Sturridge due to his impressive performance in Germany and two goals against Stoke, but Danny Ings and Christian Benteke still sidelined with knee injuries.
Knee injuries have also ruled out skipper Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez for the remainder of the season.
Dortmund travel to Merseyside with no new injury concerns. However, central defender Neven Subotic will miss the rest of the campaign.
